Landmannalaugar + Golden Circle
Super Jeep Winter Adventure

Picture this: You’re in the middle of the Icelandic highlands enjoying a drink in a natural geothermal pool while looking up to the skies and perhaps admiring the stars and the mystical show of the Northern Lights. This is after fantastic day of off-roading across the snowy mountains and across unbridged rivers, exploring crater lakes, volcanoes and the vast Icelandic highlands. You stay in a warm and cozy mountain cabin while your driver/guide prepares a delicious meal. In the morning the adventure continues; perhaps by taking a hike to enjoy the beautiful variety of the surrounding landscape or by driving in the modified Super-Jeep to explore even more of the majestic natural sights.

NOTE: This is just one of many ideas. We will gladly custom design a tour of any length according to your needs and wishes.

Itinerary for Landmannalaugar + Golden Circle 2D/1N

You travel across the deserted highlands of the southern part of Iceland in the style and comfort of a Nature Explorer modified Super-Jeep on huge tires – which is why we can get into the most isolated and deserted places in Iceland. This is also what makes this tour a unique experience.
Our tour starts by driving east out of Reykjavik through the countryside to the edge of the Icelandic highlands by the foothills of Iceland’s most famous volcano, Hekla.  The landscape is shaped by centuries of volcanic activity, the most recent from February 2000. Many different eruptions and geothermal heat has made all kinds of strange lava formations and colors. We drive through the snowy barren wilderness, across mountain deserts and unbridged rivers and do our photo stops at our own leisure.
When we arrive in Landmannalaugar we can do some light hiking and sightseeing, including crater lakes, hot springs and steamvents, lava fields and strangely colored mountains. Drinks in the natural geothermal pool where you enjoy a relaxing soak while your driverguide prepares dinner.
If the Northern Lights are visible, taking a midnight bath underneath the auroras is almost mandatory. In any case, sitting in a natural hot pool in the middle of nowhere on a dark winter night, surrounded by nothing but wilderness and glaciers, is magical and mind blowing experience that will stay with you forever.
The next day our adventure continues and there are still many sights to see. On the way out of Landmannalaugar we visit a crater lake before heading to Hrauneyjar, where you can grab a coffee while we re-inflate the big tires. We then drive to Gullfoss waterfall where we have lunch and see Iceland’s most popular waterfall cascade down 32m. Only 10 min away is Geysir where you see the original geyser and Strokkur.
The final stop before reaching Reykjavik is Thingvellir National Park where you see the tectonic plate boundaries and the site of old Viking parliament, Alþingi.
This is one of our favorite tours because it’s a great authentic Icelandic adventure in fantastic landscape, combined with the relaxation of great food and a unique soak in the geothermal pool.

“Great Trip once Again!”
My third trip to Iceland and my third tour with Nature Explorer. Everything was perfect! Thanks to Ingi our guide and driver for making it more special. His knowledge of the land and its details deserve special mention. The weather was on our side for the two separate trips we took on this occassion and we saw the northern lights at Landmannalaugar for a very very very very long time, what luck!
