Thorsmork Nature Reserve
Super Jeep Day Tour from Reykjavik

Thorsmork is a wide valley named after Thor, the Viking God of Thunder. Surrounded by 3 glaciers, Myrdalsjokull, Eyjafjallajokull and Tindfjallajokull in the southern part of Iceland, it offers a great picturesque panorama and landscape. The rugged nature of green valleys, steep mountains, clear creeks and wild rivers make Thorsmork one of the country´s most popular hiking grounds and a favorite place for many Icelanders.

Thorsmork (Icelandic: Þórsmörk) is about 160 km east of Reykjavik and the last 30 km is a great mountain track – with unbridged glacier rivers and streams to cross in our strong and reliable Super Jeeps. It´s a great 4×4 track and a lot of fun. We´ll take a photo stop by the glacier just below the crater of Eyjafjallajokull volcano. In Thorsmork we stop for a few hours to enjoy the fantastic landscape, have lunch and/or take a short hike or walks, depending on the weather and your wishes. There are three different mt. cabins in three different valleys and around each of them are different opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, whether you want to hike up a mountain, enjoy an easy walk or take photographs in the beautiful landscape that looks like a scene from Lord of the Rings. In spring, summer and fall, there is often an opportunity to take a short hike through small but magnificent canyons with a hidden waterfall at the end. Whatever the season, Thorsmork is always a great adventure in a Lord of the Rings landscape. Surrounded by three ice caps, all of them volcanoes which shelter the valley below, Thorsmork very often has much better weather than other places in south Iceland. We will also stop at the clear free falling waterfall of Seljalandsfoss where we go a short walk behind the waterfall and feel the refreshing spray and drizzle from one of Iceland´s higher waterfalls. Once in Reykjavik we will drop you off at your hotel or a restaurant of your choice.

Our driver-guides are knowledgeable about Iceland and will gladly adjust to your particular interest the best they can, whether it’s nature, geology, history, current affairs – or 4×4 stuff. We refer to it as ‘conversational guiding’. The interaction with our clients is a big part of why we love our jobs.

Fun Fact: J.R.R. Tolkien, author of Lord of the Rings, spent a couple of years in Iceland while writing his books and used a lot of Nordic Mythology in his books.

For your safety, Nature Explorer reserves the right to change tours according to weather and snow conditions. The Thorsmork tour is generally not available in January and February due to snow and extreme off-road conditions.

Amazing experience with outstanding guide

Took a private tour for 2 days with a guide from Nature Explorers. Was a truly outstanding experience. The SUV was spacious and comfortable. We had a great itinerary planned by Hawk. We visited an amazing series of sights throughout southern Iceland. In addition, our guide was not only knowledgeable about the sights of Iceland, but he was open about the people, culture and history of Iceland- bringing so much more to the trip than just a drive to see sights. It was truly a drive into the heart and soul of Iceland.
