Day 1: Arrival in Iceland
Because participants arrive on different flights at different times, transfer to Reykjavik is not included but you can either take the Flybus to Reykjavik or we can arrange for a private airport transfer (45 min. drive).
Accommodation: Hotel in Reykjavik
Day 2: Bruarfoss, Langjokull Glacier & Kerlingarfjoll
We head out of Reykjavik, drive the Golden Circle route but avoid the crowds and start by photographing Bruarfoss. We will have lunch at Gullfoss and you will have time to photograph this waterfall too if you wish. After lunch we go to Iceland’s second largest ice cap, Langjokull and photograph the glacier. Sunset photo session in the colorful rhyolite mountains of Kerlingafjoll. This is our base for 2 nights.
Sunset photography session Mt. Kirkjufell in Grundarfjordur
Sunset: 20:48
Meals included: Breakfast + lunch + dinner
Accommodation: Kerlingarfjoll Mt. Resort
Day 3: Kerlingarfjoll Mountains
Sunrise photography session at either Gygjarfoss or in the mountains, depending on the weather. The weather is always a factor but we will almost certainly also do another session or two during the day and of course we go for sunset in the colorful mountains.
Sunrise: 05:50
Sunset: 20:37
Meals included: Breakfast + lunch + dinner
Accommodation: Kerlingarfjoll Mt. Resort
Day 4: Kerlingarfjoll – Godafoss – Lake Myvatn
Sunrise photography session at either Gygjarfoss or in the mountains, depending on the weather and what we did the day before. After breakfast we drive north through the highlands, the Kjolur mt. route and connect with the Ring Road in the north. We will do refreshment/photo stop on the way.
Sunset photography session at Godafoss waterfall.
Meals included: Breakfast + lunch + dinner
Accommodation: Hotel by Lake Myvatn
Day 5: Namaskard and Dettifoss
Sunrise photography at Namaskard
Midday: Depending on weather, we might explore Dimmuborgir (unique lava formations), re-visit Krafla or relax at Myvatn Nature Baths
Sunset photography session at Dettifoss, west side
Meals included: Breakfast + lunch + dinner
Accommodation: Hotel by Lake Myvatn
Day 6: Dettifoss – Askja
Sunrise photography at Dettifoss and Selfoss, east side and then we head into the mountains, first to Herðubreiðarlindir – an oasis in the desert. The water flowing out from the stark lava creates a strong contrast. The ‘queen of Icelandic mountains’ – Herdubreid gives a strong back drop. We continue to Askja, settle in the mt. cabin and head out again for our sunset session. This is the cabin Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins stayed at when preparing for the first landing on the moon. The landscape is really lunar like and out of this world.
Meals included: Breakfast + lunch + dinner
Accommodation: Dreki mt. cabin by Askja
Day 7: Askja
Askja is a big caldera, with a big crater lake and smaller crater filled with warm sulfuric geothermal water. The black sand, geothermal activity and volcanic landscape has all the ingredients to make powerful landscape images. We will also visit Holuhraun, the newest lava in Iceland and the origin of Svarta river, where it flows out of the black sand.
Meals included: Breakfast + lunch + dinner
Accommodation: Kerlingarfjöll Mt. Resort
Day 8. Sprengisandur – F26
The ‘torture’ will not be the drive itself but the fact we can’t stop every 5 minutes to shoot. We will of course photograph a lot but it’s mostly a driving day.
Meals included: breakfast + lunch + dinner
Accommodation: Hrauneyjar Highland Center
Day 9: Landmannalaugar
We start with a short drive to Landmannalaugar and photograph the colorful mountains, the black deserts, crater lakes and geothermal activity before we head back to Reykjavik with full memory cards of great photographs and even better memories.

Awesome trips to hard to reach places!
Hawk and his team designed a fabulous, customized winter trip of Iceland for us. They planned the trip and also provided a guide, Gylfi, who was incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, fun and reliable (expert mountaineer/survival guide) for our trip. We saw the very popular locations and were also able to get to a few places off the beaten path in their amazing SuperJeeps…(we climbed glaciers, drove on black sand beach, drove off through a lava field, etc). In addition, he has experience working with photographers and helped take us to some great photos! (Ones attached are from iPhone vs better camera). All around an amazing country, people and trip!!

The best way to see the remote part of Iceland
There is no other way to see the remote interior of Iceland for me. Despite the often rough terrain I always felt safe with our very skilled driver.
